Children’s Swimming Lessons

Overview

Children’s Swimming Lessons at West Wight Sports and Community Centre on the Isle of Wight help children learn one of the most important life skills in a safe, supportive and structured environment. We are proud to have taught hundreds of children to swim, supporting confidence, safety and lifelong enjoyment of being in the water.

Our lessons are delivered by qualified and experienced swimming instructors and are suitable for a wide range of abilities, from complete non‑swimmers to more advanced swimmers. We offer a variety of lesson options to support families across the Isle of Wight community, including term‑time lessons, private one‑to‑one sessions and school holiday intensive courses, offered to residents and visiting families.

Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace, build confidence and develop strong swimming foundations in a friendly and inclusive setting.

Lesson Options Available

Group Children's Swimming Lessons

Learn to Swim – Stages 1-7

Our swimming lesson programme for school aged children 4 years + follows Swim England’s Learn to Swim Framework Stages 1–7. It’s all about developing confidence and competence through fun and enjoyment.

Advanced Swimming – Stages 8-10

After completing the learn to swim programme, these classes will teach children about swimming for fitness. Take part in drills and sets to develop stamina and distance, learn how to complete turns for each competitive stroke. Children must have completed Stage 7 or equivalent of our learn to swim programme and be confident in deep water to attend these sessions.

Please note from September 2026 we are moving to a continuous swimming programme operating 50 weeks of the year, with a break over the Christmas/New Year period. This new operating model offers:

  • Easy start up and enrolment, join any time (subject to availability)
  • Continuous assessment and movement to the next stage
  • The option to check your child’s swimming progress online and move up to the next stage when prompted by the swimming team
  • Online waiting lists
