Strength and Balance

Overview

Strength and Balance is a specialist exercise class designed to help older adults improve their strength, stability, mobility, and confidence. Delivered at West Wight Sports & Community Centre in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council's Public Health team, these welcoming one-hour sessions support participants to stay active, independent, and stronger for longer.

The class combines gentle strength-building exercises with balance and mobility activities that can help make everyday tasks feel easier and safer. Sessions include both seated and standing exercise options, creating an inclusive and supportive environment where participants can work at a pace that suits them.

To ensure the class is appropriate for individual needs and abilities, all participants are required to complete a pre-assessment with Emily, either over the phone or in person, before attending. Your first class is free, providing a great opportunity to experience the benefits of the programme and meet others in a friendly community setting.

Held weekly in Freshwater, Strength and Balance forms part of a wider island-wide programme focused on helping older Islanders maintain their health, wellbeing, and independence.

  • Boost mobility and flexibility — Movements that help maintain joint mobility, making everyday tasks easier and more comfortable.
  • Increase muscle strength — Targeted exercises support leg, core and postural strength, which are essential for stability.
