Code of Conduct

for members and users of West Wight Sports & Community Centre.

1. ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE

1.1 Purpose

The aim of this Code of Conduct is to set clear expectations for behaviour, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all. It provides guidelines for appropriate interactions and outlines behaviours that will not be tolerated, promoting equality, accountability, and mutual respect.

1.2 Prevention and Resolution

This procedure helps to prevent misconduct, reduce conflicts, and address issues like harassment and intimidation.

1.3 Membership Terms

This Code of Conduct is part of the terms and conditions of your membership with West Wight Sports & Community Centre.

2. ETHICS, BEHAVIOUR AND INTEGRITY

2.1 Respectful Behaviour

All facility users and staff should treat one another with courtesy and respect. Offensive language, discriminatory behaviour, or harassment will not be tolerated. Reports of misconduct will be taken seriously and investigated promptly.

Unacceptable Behaviour Includes:

  • The use of inappropriate or offensive language.
  • Any aggressive behaviour or misconduct as outlined in this Code of Conduct.
  • Swearing that causes offence or distress to others.
  • Disruptive behaviour, including excessive noise, rowdiness, or intentionally restricting access to facilities or equipment.
  • Inappropriate use of mobile phones.
  • Engaging in activities not permitted in specific areas (e.g., playing football in corridors, recording or photographing staff/customers without consent).
  • Any behaviour that risks the health and safety of yourself or others.
  • Any form of harassment, bullying, or discrimination based on race, gender reassignment, disability, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, or any other characteristic.
  • Abusive, threatening, or derisive remarks directed at staff or other customers.
  • Hate crime-related behaviour.
  • Harassment, stalking, inappropriate letters, or misuse of social media.
  • Non-physical aggression in any form.
  • Any actual physical contact intended to injure or intimidate, including spitting, biting, pushing, or striking. (Such behaviour may result in criminal charges.)
  • Any form of criminal activity, including drug and alcohol-related behaviour or carrying offensive weapons.
  • Deliberate damage to the premises, equipment, or fixtures (e.g. graffiti, or intentional damage to lockers or other property).
  • Theft of property belonging to the West Wight Sports & Community Centre or other users of the Centre. (This may result in criminal charges.)

2.2 Appropriate Attire

Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn whilst in the Centre.

Shirts must be worn at all times, except in the swimming pool.

Footwear should be clean and suitable for the activity.

Avoid wearing jewellery, especially necklaces, bracelets, and hoop earrings when taking part in exercise.

2.3 Personal Hygiene

Maintain good personal hygiene by wearing clean workout clothes and using deodorant.

Showers are available and should be used after exercise and if necessary, before entering the gym, sports hall or a class

Be considerate of others in shared spaces.

All swimmers are encouraged to shower before entering the pool.

2.4 Equipment Use

All gym users must undergo an induction with a qualified staff member before using the gym.

Use equipment correctly and for its intended purpose.

After use, return equipment to its designated place.

If unsure how to use equipment, ask staff for assistance.

2.5 Respect for Space and Time

Be mindful of booking times and ensure you leave the booked facility within your allotted time

Wherever possible we will ensure sports hall bookings are a full 60 minutes. However, we reserve the right to limit bookings to 50 minutes, to allow sufficient change over time.

Swimmers should be considerate of others in the pool.

Ensure you are in the appropriate lane for your swimming speed and ability. Follow the clockwise/anticlockwise lane rules or agree with other swimmers if you wish to swim up and down and not clockwise/anticlockwise.

2.6 Cleanliness

Wipe down equipment after use with the provided sanitising spray and blue roll.

Tidy up after yourself – use the bins provided and return chairs to where you found them

2.7 Noise Levels

Keep noise levels, including music, conversations, and phone calls, at an appropriate level.

Be mindful of others who may require a quiet or focused environment.

We have a garden where children can play under supervision.

Please be mindful that it can be dangerous if children are running around the café or corridors.

2.8 Food and Drink

Food is only permitted in the café area or corridors.

Drinks should be carried in sealed bottles to avoid spills and potential accidents.

Water dispensers are available in the gym and café area for refills. Bottled water is also available for purchase at reception or the café.

2.9 Mobile Phone Use

Limit mobile phone use to appropriate areas and be considerate when taking calls.

2.10 Photography

Do not take photographs or videos in the pool area, changing areas, gym, or classes unless you have been given specific permission by a member of staff.

2.11 Respecting Staff and their Instructions

Respect the instructions of staff and management. If you have any concerns or questions, please address them respectfully with a staff member.

3. BREACH OF CODE OF CONDUCT

3.1 Consequences

We strive to engage and assist all customers. However, there may be occasions where behaviours cannot be tolerated. If the Code of Conduct is breached, the following actions may be taken to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment:

  • An investigation into the matter.
  • Exclusion from the premises or specific services.
  • Referral to the police, if necessary.
